For over fifteen years, Margarita Lekaj has helped public institutions manage money the way it should be managed: carefully, transparently, and with the people it's meant to serve always in view.
She started in commercial banking, holding branch leadership positions at JPMorgan Chase and Bank of New York, where she managed full profit-and-loss responsibility and was ranked among the top 10% of branch managers nationally. Then she made a deliberate change — trading the private sector for public service, because she wanted her work to matter closer to home.
Today, her focus is budget planning, procurement, capital projects, and fund accounting for public institutions in New York State. She holds an MBA from SUNY New Paltz, a Certificate in Education from Georgetown University, and additional leadership training through the ASBO Leadership Academy and the College of Saint Rose.
Margarita immigrated to the United States from Montenegro at age 23, arriving without English and building a career, an education, and a family from there. That path shapes how she works: with patience, persistence, and a deep respect for institutions that exist to help people.
